These stunning, rarely formed clouds popularly known as "jellyfish clouds" for their resemblance to the species were observed in Kitakyushu's Tobata ward in Fukuoka Prefecture on Oct. 27, 2011. According to meteorological experts, jellyfish clouds usually form when the atmospheric current is disturbed by strong winds, but only last for a very short time. This photograph was taken at around 5:30 p.m., minutes before sunset. (Tsuneharu Katsuki/ Nipporen)
